Question
What are the recommended steps to resolve issues with low or zero readings on an PAH500?
Summary
Troubleshooting steps to take for PAH500 with low readings or a zero reading.
Answer
The root cause of the low or zero readings on an PAH500 is that the mV readings have dropped since the factory calibration. When the mV drops below a threshold, the reading will always be zero.

Follow these steps to resolve this issue:
1. Clean the sensor using a lanolin-free dish detergent or 90% or higher Isopropyl alcohol. This is done to remove lipids like oils and greases that may have accumulated on the interior tube wall.
2. If cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, then a calibration is required.  Before the calibration can be performed, the software needs to be upgraded. Attached is the update files, and the instructions to perform the update can be found here: Service Video: PAH500 Calibration 01: Firmware Update
3. Once the update is complete, then perform either a one or two point calibration. A two point calibration is preferred, but a one point calibration will suffice until standards are available.
Instructions for performing a one point calibration can be found here: Service Video: PAH500 Calibration 03: One Point Calibration
Instructions for performing a two point calibration can be found here: Service Video: PAH500 Calibration 04: Two Point Calibration

To perform this procedure, the Calibration/Verification Kit for PAH500 0-50PPB Product # LZC541 is recommended. This kit includes:
  • 25 ppb standard (40 mL total in two glass ampules of 20 mL each). This is for verifyting the calibration and readings.
  • 50 ppb standard (40 mL total in two glass ampules of 20 mL each). This is for the two point calibration.
  • 500 mL bottle of DI water for cleaning and two point calibration.
  • Pack of 10 foam swabs. (Additional swabs are available as a pack of 50 with Product # 9774000)
  • Fill/drain valve to screw onto the bottom of the PAH500 to ease calibration process.
  • 1/4 Inch NPT plug in case it is preferred over the fill/drain valve.
  • Pack of 20 disposable pipettes (never reuse an old pipette, particularly with Phenanthrene standard).
  • Ampule breaker.
  • Two empty transfer vials to pour the standards into and make pipetting easier.
  • User instructions.
The only thing that is not included is a cleaning solution like Isopropyl alcohol due to shipping challenges.
