Answer
Temporary and permanent hardness are terms used to differentiate between hardness that can be removed by boiling the water (temporary) from hardness than cannot be removed by boiling (permanent). Temporary hardness is synonymous with carbonate hardness. Permanent hardness is synonymous with noncarbonate hardness.
