Question
What causes positive results with the Glycol Visual Test Kit, Model EG-1 on unused motor oil?
Summary
Glycol determination on unused motor oil
Answer
Regarding the Glycol Visual Test Kit, Model EG-1 (Product # 218640), Hach does not have documentation regarding specific motor oil/lube blends. However, it is known that some glycol compounds and glycol additives can be found in unused motor oils and cause false positive results. To avoid false positive results from such additives, the oil should be run through the vehicle for a few minutes before testing, as any glycol present in the oil will volatilize and no longer be detected. Be sure to allow the oil to cool before testing. Glycol introduced from a leak will continue to be present due to the continuous addition from the leak.
