Question
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) lists the CDTA reagent as being "fatal in contact with skin." Is this correct?
Summary
CDTA SDS clarification.
Answer
OSHA specifies the statements that must be included in SDSs for certain ingredients at certain concentration levels. CDTA reagent includes a ingredient called Tetramethylammonium Hydroxide (TMAH) that has toxicity data which leads to the inclusion of the wording "Fatal in Contact with Skin" in the SDS to be required at the concentration that is present in the product. After this change was made to the SDS, all orders for this product include a copy of the SDS automatically.

Hach is investigating the possibility of using a lower concentration that would not require this specific wording. Until then, the statement is intentional and is not included in error, using the wording required by OSHA. As with any product users should follow the guidelines for handling the product as indicated by the SDS including the use of all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
