Question
If a sample contains sodium azide will this affect the Total Nitrogen test using TNT826?
Summary
TNT826 and sodium azide interference.
Answer
Nitrogen (Total) TNTplus Vial Test, LR (1-16 mg/L N; Product # TNT826) contains sodium azide in the MicroCap C. T he sodium azide in this method is used to adjust the pH after the alkaline digestion. Adding the sodium azide produces hydrazoic acid. The only place that the background sodium azide could cause an issue is lowering the pH too much and alkaline reagent doesn’t have enough buffering capacity to adjust the sample pH for the alkaline digestion.
