Question
Why is the pump tube for the sample line shorter than other pump tubes on the Lachat FIA instrument?
Summary
Sample line pump tube length for Lachat FIA
Answer
It is recommended to trim each pump tube used for the sample line to prevent having to redetermine the "time to valve" every time the sample line pump tube is changed.

The sample must travel through this pump tube to reach the valve, its length affects the time to valve. Though pump tubes have specifications for inner diameter, they do not have a specification for length and can vary in length from lot to lot. Typically users will trim each pump tube used for the sample line so that there is one inch outside of each tab.  As long as the sample line pump tubes are each trimmed to the same length there should not be a significant change in valve timing when this pump tube is changed.
