Answer
The 5500 sc analyzer uses a pressure differential technique to calculate the flow rate into the analyzer. The tubing length and characteristics of the tubing and heating coil are known and used in the calculation of the sample flow rate. When looking in the analyzer data section of the menu (menu > view data > analyzer data) pressure 1 and pressure 2 are displayed.  When the sample solenoid valve is closed these two pressures should be close to the same value.  When the sample solenoid valve opens, pressure 2 will drop to close to 0 while pressure 1 will remain the same.  The analyzer will calculate the flow rate when this pressure drop occurs.
