Question
Can Toluene be used in place of Chloroform as the solvent reagent in the Total Acid Number (TAN) titration using the AT1000?
Summary
Toluene verses Chloroform for TAN application on AT1000.
Answer
The application note recommends the use of Chloroform, 500 mL (Product # 1445849), however, this application is based on ASTM D664 which recommends using Toluene. Toluene can be used in place of Chloroform, both completely dissolve certain heavy petrochemical residues. TAN results obtained with Chloroform may not be the exact same as results obtained with Toluene.
