Question
If samples are not acid preserved as specified in the TNT880 method for s-TKN, what should be done?
Summary
Samples results intended for s-TKN analysis that are not acid-preserved
Answer
The simplified TKN test Product # TNT880 is designed to be ran on preserved samples. If samples are not preserved, the test will not measure the nitrite and the TKN result may have a higher result.
To obtain the nitrite values a separate nitrite test with  TNTplus Vial Test, LR (0.015-0.600 mg/L NO2--N) (Product # TNT839) or nitrite TNTplus Vial Test, HR (0.6-6.0 mg/L NO2--N) (Product # TNT840) or similar method must be ran.
Compare the value from the nitrite test to the NO3+NO2 value obtained from the Simplified TKN (s-TKN™) TNTplus Vial Test (0-16 mg/L N)  (Product # TNT880) method. If the results are significant, then add the nitrite result to NO3+NO2 results and subtract this value from the TKN result.
