If an "unstable lighting conditions!"message is appearing while running a test on a Hach spectrophotometer, there are a couple of things to check:

- If the test is run under bright lighting conditions, like sunlight, trying moving the instrument to a darker location and retesting.
- It is possible the sample is under range. Under range results will sometimes display a negative number or "unstable lighting conditions". Trying running a standard in the middle of the testing range to verify if this is the issue.
- Make sure the sample cell compartment is clean.
- Make sure the blank is prepared properly. For example, in the surfactants method 8028, the blank is pure benzene (not deionized water).
