Question
What can cause an "unstable lighting conditions!" message on a Hach spectrophotometer?
Summary
"Unstable lighting conditions!" error message.
Answer
If an "unstable lighting conditions!"message is appearing while running a test on a Hach spectrophotometer, there are a couple of things to check:
  1. If the test is run under bright lighting conditions, like sunlight, trying moving the instrument to a darker location and retesting.
  2. It is possible the sample is under range. Under range results will sometimes display a negative number or "unstable lighting conditions". Trying running a standard in the middle of the testing range to verify if this is the issue.
  3. Make sure the sample cell compartment is clean.
  4. Make sure the blank is prepared properly. For example, in the surfactants method 8028, the blank is pure benzene (not deionized water).

If everything checks out, then the instrument needs to be sent in for service. Contact Technical Support by completing this form Ask a Question.
