Question
Can any form of Alka-Seltzer be used as a replacement for the Hydrogen Sulfide Test kit HS-C?
Summary
H2S Alka-Seltzer reagent
Answer
The effervescent tablets used in the kit HS-C Product # 2537800 are the Alka-Seltzer® Gold and do not contain aspirin. Many forms of these effervescent tablets will contain aspirin (for example Alka-Seltzer® Blue), which is much more common. Aspiring free can be difficult to source locally. Often the question comes up if the aspirin containing effervescent tablets can be used.

Effervescent tablets containing aspirin can be used, however doing so does lead to a more aggressive reaction than using aspirin free effervescent tablets. This more aggressive reaction leads to less uniformity in the result. This lack of uniformity in the result could lead to issues with result interpretation. This is the main reason that it's recommended to use aspirin free effervescent tablets in addition to lower shipping requirements.

Below are pictures that show the results on standards comparing aspirin free (gold) with aspirin containing (blue) effervescent tablets. Because the difference in uniformity is believed to be caused by a more aggressive reaction, an additional test with one tablet instead of two was also attempted which is also pictured.
