Question
What is the correct blanking procedure for ozone method 8311?
Summary
Ozone blanking procedure
Answer
The ozone indigo method 8311 utilizes a bleaching chemistry with the blank being darker than the reacted sample. The early Hach spectrophotometers and colorimeters did not have the capability of reading negative absorbance values. Therefore the sample was used to zero the instrument and the blank was read to give a positive absorbance value.

All of Hach's current instruments can read a negative absorbance and therefore an ozone-free water sample is used for the zero and the sample is read to determine a concentration.
