Question
Does the BW680 Ballast Water Handheld Fluorometer measure phaeopigments?
Summary
Phaeopigment measurement with the BW860
Answer
The BW680 (Product # 2037700) measures variable fluorescence derived from active chlorophyll a, found in physiologically competent phytoplankton. Degradation products of chlorophyll a, such as phaeopigments, will not trigger a response in the BWI parameter. The BWI parameter can be likened to the variable fluorescence term, FV, which is the difference between Fm and Fo, the max and min values of variable fluorescence, respectively (Fv=Fm-Fo).
