Is it recommended to digest a sample prior to testing for cyanide?
Digestion and testing for cyanide
It is not recommended to digest a sample being tested for cyanide. When a cyanide sample is acidified, the cyanide creates a hydrogen cyanide gas which is very toxic and can be lethal. To remove interferences from a sample, distillation is required. The distillation produces the same HCN gas, but it is trapped within the distillation apparatus.
