Question
Is it really necessary to use organic-free water for the total organic carbon (TOC) blank vial? I have good quality deionized water that I would prefer to use.
Summary
Organic-free water for Total Organic Carbon blank
Answer
Organic-free water must be used for the blank vial in the TOC tests using methods 10128, 10129 and 10173 ; deionized water can have low concentrations of organic matter that will cause the blank to read high and cause low test results. Not using organic-free water is one of the most common problems that people have with this test. Organic-free water should be packaged in glass bottles; water packaged in plastic containers will show contamination and cause low results.
