Many Hach instruments give the option to change the chemical form on the units. Refer to the instrument user manual for instructions on changing the chemical form. After the test it done, the units can be converted by manual calculation. Since this number is just a ratio of the atomic masses of the elements in the chemical form, this calculation doesn’t actually change the concentration of nitrate in the sample; it only changes the value in relation to the units it is expressed in.

For example:
Changing your height from 6 feet to 72 inches, or to 183 cm, doesn’t change your actual height, it only changes the units in which it is reported. They are all mathematically equivalent.

To convert from units of nitrogen (NO3-N) to nitrate (NO3), multiple the value by 4.427. To change from nitrate (NO3) to nitrogen (NO3-N), divide the value by 4.427.
