Question
Is there an easy digestion method for total metals that is not USEPA approved?
Summary
Easy digestion for total metals is not USEPA approved
Answer
Yes, the Metals Prep Set for TNTplus Vial Test (Product # TNT890) can be used with the DRB 200 reactor as an alternative procedure (download procedure here) to the standard hydrochloric and nitric acid hot plate digestion procedure. However, the use of this chemistry and DRB 200 reactor is not approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).
For the USEPA accepted total metals digestion, see this article.
The Metals Prep Set can be used for pretreatment in the analysis of Cadmium, Copper, Iron, Lead and Nickel, but cannot be used for determination of Total Aluminum because the reaction tube glass contains aluminum.
It requires 10 mL of the sample and produces a total of 12 mL of solution, which therefore dilutes the sample by a factor of 1.2; multiply the measured result by this factor to determine the original sample's result.
