Question
What is a precipitation test and why does Hach not support it?
Summary
Precipitation test
Answer
At one time Hach sold a precipitation test but it was not being used correctly and was therefore made obsolete. The chemistry added to the water was a flocculating agent which combined with the dissolved minerals in the sample and caused them to precipitate. It was found that some water testing companies were using this visual test to convince customers that their water was bad and that they needed equipment to improve the quality, although the minerals precipitated may be harmless.
