Question
What could cause an ammonia blank value to be high?
Summary
Causes for a high nitrogen ammonia reagent blank
Answer
The Nitrogen, Ammonia- Salicylate or Nessler methods use a reagent blank to zero the instrument before the reacted sample is measured. A reagent blank is deionized water plus the Nitrogen, Ammonia reagents.

A possible reason for a high reagent blank measurement may a contaminated deionized water source, which is common with Ammonia chemistries. It would be recommended to use a new deionized water source and retest. If the high result remains, analyze a Nitrogen, Ammonia standard solution of known concentration and contact Hach Technical Support with the results of this test and the Nitrogen, Ammonia reagent set catalog number and lot number.
