Question
What is the best way to measure free ammonia in chloraminated water (water combined with chlorine and ammonia)?
Summary
Measuring free ammonia in samples containing chlorine (chloramination application)
Answer
Ammonia that has not combined with chlorine is known as free ammonia. Provided in the list below are two methods for measuring free nitrogen ammonia.

-The Chloramine (Mono) Nitrogen Free Ammonia Method 10200 is able to test free ammonia in the field.
-Ammonia Ion Selective Electrode (ISE) Methods 10001 / 10002  may not provide adequate sensitivity at low ammonia concentrations.

Traditional testing methods for nitrogen ammonia using Nessler or salicylate reagent sets list monochloramine as an interference. If monochloramine is in the sample, the nitrogen ammonia results will be biased high. Avoid these methods for free ammonia testing.
