Question
Is there a titration method for direct hydroxide alkalinity?
Summary
Direct measurement of hydroxide alkalinity
Answer
The procedure provided below is used in industrial water applications. It was not developed by Hach and is not referenced in the Water Analysis Handbook (WAH).
1. Add a 10% barium chloride solution to the sample to precipitate the carbonate.
2. Add 5 mL of barium chloride solution per 50 mL sample.
3. Stir and titrate to the phenolphthalein endpoint or until sample is pH 8.3 as measured with a pH meter.
